ROUGE 58 presents "THE FORTY - DEUCE " Exhibition & book presentation. "THE FORTY - DEUCE " better known as 42nd street, Times Square in the early 80's. 

Photographs taken by Bill Butterworth documenting "the wild side"

of Times Square in the years of '83-84.

The "Forty-deuce" includes images of young Hustler's, Hookers, bad boy's, gangster's, people in the sex entertainment business and people who frequently visited Times Square. It is a heavy contrast from the gritty to the commercial disneyland times square we know of today.

Bill Butterworth was known as the "photo man" of 42nd street from 1983 - 1997. Compared to other photographer's who shot in Polaroid at this time, Bill photographed on 70mm format just in case his clients would like a 2nd copy he'd have the negative. The negatives weren't published until Hilton Ariel Ruiz, NY based photographer and filmmaker collected the negatives in 2011 and collaborated with Powerhouse Books to present his work in the book " The-Forty deuce " 

The exhibition includes 13 photographs both published and unpublished.

ROUGE 58 présente l'exposition "THE FORTY-DEUCE", mieux connu sous le nom de la 42ème rue à Times Square, New-York, au début des années 80.

Des photographies réalisées par Bill Butterworth illustrant "le Wild Side"

de Times Square entre 1983 et 1984.

The "Forty-Deuce" propose des clichés de jeunes macs, prostituées, mauvais garçons et gangsters, afin de retranscrire au mieux la faune de ce Times Square de l’époque.
Ce travail marque un contraste probant entre la réalité de ce quartier mythique 30 ans auparavant et celle du Times Square « Disneyland » aseptisé que l'on connaît aujourd'hui.

Bill Butterworth était connu sous le nom de "photo man" de la 42eme rue de 1983 à 1997. A l'inverse des autres photographes qui utilisaient des Polaroids, Bill photographiait avec un format 70mm afin de pouvoir toujours ainsi disposer des négatifs. Ces négatifs ne furent jamais publiés avant que Hilton Ariel Ruiz NY photographe et réalisateur ne les collectionne et collabore avec Powerhouse Books pour présenter son travail dans le livre "The Forty-Deuce''.

Cette exposition est composée de 13 photos dont certaines inédites. 

Fidèle à son engagement dans l’art, Grolsch soutiendra Rouge 58 et proposera une dégustation de ses bières.

Des portraits intimes de l'emblématique artiste Allemand Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) pris, chez lui, dans sa maison et son atelier de Düsseldorf. Des portraits de sa performance au Centre Pompidou en '84 et durant ses cours magistraux en Allemagne réalisés par Nicolle A. Meyer (USA). Cette dernière a travaillé en tant que mannequin et muse de 

 

 

Le travail du photographe Ruvan Wijesooriya, est actuellement visible dans la toute nouvelle galerie parisienne ROUGE 58. Dans le cadre de la sortie du livre réalisé par Ruvan sur le groupe LCD Soundsystem, ROUGE 58 vous invite, ce Mercredi 5 décembre, à découvrir cet ouvrage, en exclusivité avant sa sortie officielle du 11 decembre ainsi qu’une installation d’un choix de photos, autour d’un verre de vin chaud. Ruvan était le photographe officiel du Label musical DFA dont James Murphy, leader de LCD Soundsystem, en est le co-fondateur. Durant 7 années, Ruvan, qui a suivi le groupe dans le monde entier, capturant tour à tour concerts et diverses soirées, est devenu très proche de l’ensemble des membres de LCD. Ces moments rares et intimes sont présentés dans l’ouvrage.

NY based Photographer Ruvan Wijesooriya is currently showing a series of photographs at Rouge 58 Gallery, which recently opened its doors. To celebrate Ruvan's LCD book which pays tribute to the band LCD Soundystem, Rouge 58 is having a book release Cocktail on December 5th where the LCD book will be exclusively available before the official release date on Dec 11th. A surprise installation of photographs will also be shown. Ruvan has also been the official Photographer for the music label DFA that James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, co-founded. For seven years, Wijesooriya followed the band around the world documenting through rare photographs a collection of private moments, the tours, parties and most of all the close friendship that Ruvan Wijessoriya has with LCD Soundsystem.

 “BECOMING” A SERIES BY RUVAN WIJESOORIYA 7 NOVEMBRE - 8 FEVRIER 2013

«Becoming », une série inédite de photographies par Ruvan Wijesooriya. Le photographe exposera pour la première fois à Paris des clichés traitant des sujets tels que le sexe, la flore, les nuages, le voyage, ou encore la solitude.

Connu généralement pour ses portraits, ses captures spontanées et ses photos crues, puisées dans les univers mode et musicaux, il a plus récemment contribué à l’ouvrage-chronique autour du groupe LCD Soundsystem. Ouvrage disponible en exclusivité avant la date de sortie du 14 Decembre 2012 chez Rouge 58.

Rouge 58 is pleased to present a series of Ruvan Wijesooriya’s photographs, “Becoming.” This is the first time his work is shown in Paris, the series touching on subjects including sex, flora, clouds, travel, solitude and people pasted with a flash onto the night. Widely known for his portraits and spontaneous, raw pictures of music and fashion – most recently his book chronicling the band, LCD Soundsystem. “Becoming” provides contrast to this work, drawing from an indulgence in escapism and the attentive observance and documentation of seemingly obvious moments. This series reflects on the more consistent themes in Ruvan’s work, employing the idea that often in order to move forward, one must look backwards. This collection of photos shows the initial image that determined a visual path for the artist. His LCD Book will be exclusively available at Rouge 58 before the release on December 14th 2012.
